Bruce’s Journey with Synergy

I joined Synergy in 2019, just before the world changed with Covid. Over the past five years, Synergy has been a lifeline for me, guiding me through difficult times and helping me rediscover parts of myself I thought were lost.

One of the biggest surprises has been learning to play the drums. I never imagined I’d be able to do something like that, but the encouragement I found here gave me the confidence to try. It’s been a huge boost to my self-esteem, and now, I find joy in expressing myself through music in ways I never thought possible.

Beyond the music, I’ve also found a community of friends who truly understand and support me. Together, we’ve shared laughter, creativity, and growth. My art has flourished, and in so many ways, I’ve grown into a stronger, more confident person.

Synergy has been a cornerstone of my recovery, and I’m grateful for the role it’s played in helping me become who I am today.

Charlie’s story

During a call to the Samaritans, where I explained I had researched my suicide kit and was about to order it online, they persuaded me to get in touch with my GP. She got me an urgent appointment with a psychiatrist and, at the age of 75, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder finally gave an explanation for my lifelong struggles with depression and occasional intense highs. Therapy at the East Brighton Community Mental Health Centre and attending Bipolar UK meetings were helpful, yet I had become isolated and friendless after years of mental and physical challenges. I dreaded going back to my lonely existence

Someone mentioned Synergy, and I started going along, though initially I often sat in a corner not wanting to speak to anyone. Eventually, I participated in a djembe session and, despite my complete lack of drumming skills, no one criticised me.

I committed to attending every week, even when it was hard to drag myself out of bed. Gradually, I came to look forward to it. I actually started to make new friends!

Through therapy, I learned to manage my bipolar symptoms. Through Synergy, my confidence returned, and life became good again. I haven’t had suicidal thoughts for several years. Thank you to my lovely friends at Synergy!
