About

Synergy Peer Support is a group of people that meet every Tuesday afternoon at West Hill Hall, Compton Avenue, Brighton, BN1 3PS. The hall is near Brighton railway station and is a 2-minute walk from the No. 7 and 27 bus routes.

We are an informal group with personal experience of mental health issues. Our purpose is to provide a place to meet, socialise, and take part in creative activities or simply chat about life in general or mental health in particular. For some of us, Synergy has proved very helpful in our recovery, but there is no pressure to change in any way. We aim to be non-judgemental, having faced mental challenges ourselves.

We are not mental health professionals, so we cannot offer counselling or therapy. Any advice offered by an individual does not represent the group as a whole. We are however very willing to listen if you want to talk about your concerns.

There is no charge, but we won’t refuse donations to help pay for the hall, as we have no official funding. You can drop in during the afternoon for as long or short a time as you like. A volunteer prepares a freshly made vegetarian meal, which you can book the day before. The meal costs £4 to cover expenses, or you are welcome to bring your own food and eat with us. Tea and coffee are 30p.

Activities generally take place as follows (times are approximate):

  • 12:30 – 2:00: Chat, play board games, or work on individual art projects as you choose. You can also sit and read, use your laptop (we have internet access), or engage in other activities.
  • 2:00 – 3:00: Lunch or continue with your chosen activities.
  • 3:00 – 4:30: Music making. We have djembe and other hand-played drums (no experience required), and you are welcome to try them or bring your own musical instruments and join in. It gets fairly noisy, so some people choose to talk in the kitchen or outside, weather permitting.

Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome. There is an accessible toilet, and the main hall is accessible, though it’s best to discuss car parking ahead of arrival.
